Migration is a human right!

Say Their Names!

Say Their Names
From December 10th to 18th, 2022, we read the names of the 48,647 people who have died at the borders of Fortress Europe since 1993 at various locations in the Netherlands. These individuals lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea, the Balkan mountains, the primeval forests of Poland, or a Dutch reception center.

December 10th is Human Rights Day, and December 18th is International Migrants Day. Human rights no longer apply to migrants in Europe. People in need are not helped but instead put in (mortal) danger. The European border is fiercely guarded and has become the deadliest in the world. Even Dutch politicians, from left to right, call for protecting borders instead of people.

In 2021, we placed thousands of wooden boards on the beach of Terschelling during the Oerol festival in memory of the then 48,000 names of deceased migrants at the European border since 1993.

A huge thanks to the team at UNITED Against Refugee Deaths, who have been maintaining the list of fatalities for nearly 30 years.
